The problem is the 'service' light comes on the dashboard - the gearbox wont change gear - then it bangs into 3rd - and wont change - I then stop turn the engine off then back on again and it seems to work fine - until the next journey and it will happen again - this doesn't happen on every journey. Hope someone can help
I bought a (2007) C4 Grand Picasso in April last year and love it!! But in the last week or so it hasn't been engaging gear properly. It intermittently doesn't engage reverse and has started doing it in forward gears too. It doesn't do it all the time and seems to take a few attempts to engage the gear. Any ideas?

Thick sludge around the filler cap would indicate that the engine has been running too cold. The place to look for water in the oil bubbles on the dipstick, but the garage should be able to do a gas sniffer test on the coolant top up bottle. Your level dropping once the engine was hot could just be an air lock expelled.
Undo this and let the oil drain out completely. Then, on the top of the gearbox there is a breather tube, remove the air box too get to it, you have to put the oil back in the gearbox through this tube, easiest way I found was using a small funnel in the end of the tube and carefully pouring the oil in. Gearbox holds 2.1 litres of oil.
